Monstera, philodendron and their relatives climb trees in the wild. Their thick roots like to stay slightly moist but need plenty of air. Indoor potting soil on its own turns into a dense, wet block in a pot. This mix is chunky: bark and coco chips for air, perlite for drainage, a little peat to hold moisture.

Is it right for your plant?

Use it for

  • Monstera deliciosa and monstera adansonii
  • Philodendron, climbing and upright
  • Pothos and scindapsus
  • Alocasia and anthurium
  • Syngonium and most tropical foliage plants

What's inside

40%Fir bark: the chunky base: air around thick aroid roots
25%Coco chips: hold moisture inside, stay airy outside
20%Perlite: drainage and lighter weight
10%Horticultural charcoal: keeps the structure open over time
5%Sphagnum peat moss: a little extra water holding between waterings

Excess water drains out within a minute. Water again when the top 3–5 cm feel dry, usually every 7–10 days in a bright room. The mix stays open for about 2 years.

How much do I need?

Enter your pot size. We assume a typical nursery pot filled to the top.

You need about
–

When you repot, the root ball takes up part of the pot, so you usually need a bit less. Leftover mix keeps for months in the closed bag.

How to repot

  1. Repot in spring or summer, when roots come out of the drainage holes or circle the pot.
  2. Lightly moisten the mix before using it, so it does not dust.
  3. Water the plant a day before, then slide it out of the pot.
  4. Loosen circling roots with your fingers. Remove roots that are black and mushy.
  5. Choose a pot 2–5 cm wider than the old one, with drainage holes.
  6. Add mix to the bottom, set the plant at the same depth, fill around and tap the pot to settle. If you use a moss pole, put it in now.
  7. Water thoroughly until water runs out the bottom, and keep the plant out of direct sun for a week.

Aroid Mix: questions

What is the best soil for monstera?

A chunky mix that drains well but holds some moisture: bark, coco, perlite and a little peat. That is exactly what Aroid Mix is.

Can I use it for pothos?

Yes. Pothos is an aroid and grows well in it. It also works for most tropical foliage houseplants.

Is it the same as indoor plant soil?

It is chunkier and drains faster than typical indoor potting soil, which helps prevent root rot. Most tropical houseplants do well in it.

Does Aroid Mix contain fertilizer?

No. Use a balanced houseplant fertilizer from spring to early fall, following the label.

How much do I need for a large monstera?

A 25 cm (10 inch) pot takes about 8–9 litres, so three bags. Use the calculator above for your pot.
