Why not regular potting soil?

Water sits in the pot

All-purpose soil holds water for days. That suits a tomato on a hot patio, not an orchid on a winter windowsill.

The roots rot

Roots need air as much as water. In soggy soil they suffocate and rot, and the first sign is often a plant that wilts while the soil is wet.

The structure is wrong

An orchid needs chunks of bark, a cactus needs grit, a violet needs a soft, fluffy mix. One bag can't be all of these.

How it works

  1. Choose your plant. Each mix page says which plants it suits and which it doesn't.
  2. Get the right amount. Enter your pot size in the calculator, and we ship the bags to your door.
  3. Repot with the instructions. Each page has 7 short steps for that plant.

Questions

Why not just use regular potting soil?

Regular potting soil is made for the average plant and holds a lot of water. Orchids, succulents, aroids and violets each need a different balance of air and moisture, and in regular soil their roots often rot.

How much does shipping cost?

Shipping is a flat $12 within our province and $20 to the rest of Canada, and free on orders from $60. Quebec is coming soon.

How many pots does one bag fill?

One 3 L bag fills one to three typical houseplant pots. Every mix page has a calculator: enter your pot size and it tells you how many bags you need.

Do the mixes contain fertilizer?

No. They contain only the components listed on each page. Use your usual fertilizer as the plant needs it.

How long does a bag keep?

Months, if the bag stays closed and dry. The components do not spoil.

Do you ship to Quebec?

Not yet. We are preparing a French version of the site first, as required in Quebec.
